The Thinking Behind This Piece

Watan presents a new series of high-resolution, original prints that we hope people will enjoy (because we do enjoy being tongue-in-cheek hehe): the Palestinian Shade Series. While perusing countless pictures--through the time of the British Mandate, the Nakba, and everything moving forward--we found various examples of Palestinian womxn who seemed to be (as the current turn of phrase states) "throwing shade".

The Arabic roughly translates to: "God give you a thousand blessings". In positive settings, the speaker probably wishes you the best of luck and health, etc. But in negative settings (i.e. when a womxn is throwing shade at, for example, some instance of mansplaining), the speaker is likely sarcastically thanking you for your advice or help that wasn't requested. HENCE, THE SHADE.

The background is a hand-drawn and vectorized take on a traditional Palestinian tatreez (embroidery) feather pattern.
